I have invested a lot of time into developing an understanding of how Mathematical Fluency develops. Maths can be such a polarising topic - you either love it or you hate it! Generally speaking, you sit in the "love it" camp if you experienced success in maths at school, and you fall into the "hate it" category if you found school maths confusing, anxiety-inducing, or even traumatic. But there is a middle ground and it doesn't have to be a battle hard-fought either. If we look at how numeracy develops from birth, and how it follows the same path that our early human ancestors followed when developing their understanding of mathematics, we can clearly see the path we must follow when facilitating mathematics learning.
