It was hard to choose a single John Holt quote - he had so much wisdom to share with us. This quote really resonates with me because this is what I see almost every day in my work. Children who are so afraid, that they cannot think!
They have been taught to fear mistakes.
They have been conditioned to fear failure.
They feel intense fear (and shame) when their failure is seen by others.
They would rather say / do / think nothing, than be caught saying / doing / thinking the wrong thing.
And fear is the enemy of learning. And we are the makers of that fear.
